Uzoma Nkem-Abonta was born on October 28, 1967, in Arochukwu, Abia State, Nigeria. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nkem-Abonta. He attended Government Secondary School, Arochukwu, where he obtained his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 1985. In 1986, he gained admission to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he studied Political Science and International Relations. He graduated in 1991 with a Second Class Upper Division (2.1).

After his graduation from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nkem-Abonta proceeded to the Lagos State University, where he obtained a Master of Laws (LL.M) degree in International Law and Diplomacy in 1993. He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, which he obtained in 2000.

Nkem-Abonta began his career as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science at the University of Uyo in 1994. He later joined the Abia State Civil Service in 1996, where he rose to the position of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Strategy in 2002.

In 2003, Nkem-Abonta was elected to the Federal House of Representatives on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was re-elected in 2007 and 2011. In 2015, he defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 2019.
